Resurrection

“It’s been a long time I shouldn’t have left you, without a strong rhyme to step to.”- Rakim 1987

Out of the darkness.

Out of the darkness.

Hello friends I know I have been away for a long time. But; I am back! I looked back and seen that my last post was in 2013. School really was hectic that year and the course load almost burned me out.

Then in the holiday time of 2013 I got hurt. I strained my groin in an area that was a main junction  for all the nerves that travel down my leg. This pain had me practically crippled and homebound for three months. I was trapped in my third floor apartment and on crutches. Talk about cabin fever! I went through a period of despair and stress from being stuck during that time. To add to this the medication I was taking had me feeling depressed as well. Thankfully with the help of family; especially my  mother  I was able to get food and other things done. December 2013 was a dark month for me.

January rolled in and I started to recover. First with a cane I was able to hobble around and got to get some cold winter air. I can say that this was a time for reflection on my life and what I AM I REALLY DOING?

“I think therefore I am…”

February came I was slowly walking with a limp (no cane).  This gave me the time to slowly build up my strength and work on my mind as well. I listened to a lot of personal development seminars and lectures on how to change and grow. This time I really enjoyed as I got to see what makes me tick good and bad.  I also started doing Yoga to help build my body back.

During March I started to go back to the gym and worked myself back in my usual routine. Each week I pushed myself a little harder added more to see what and how I stood. This is how I recovered.  I mentioned before about Arete, which means excellence in ALL things that you do. This has been my driving force since my injury.

Fast forward to the Summer and I am back! Not in school but considering a new major for my success.

The gears are working towards success.

The gears are working towards success.

Finally I wanted to share a few thoughts and ideas some are common truths but need to be reiterated.

  • Family will always be there for you.
  • Never be to proud to ask for help.
  • It’s amazing how your body can heal itself along with your mind.
  • Sometimes life can screw your plans up; then you have to adapt and reassert yourself.
  • Feeling sorry for yourself wastes time and energy.
  • Yoga heals!

Thanks for reading!

Interlude: Fear

Hello friends this will be another interlude on my blog. These are just short posts on my thoughts on life and things. This one came to me while I was cutting grass. As you know I am a US Army veteran and have done two tours in Iraq. Once in 2003 and again in 2005. I was apart of the initial invasion that thrust into Baghdad in March of 2003. Luckily the parts of the conflict I was involved in was minimal.

I eventually returned home to thankful family and friends. Sometime after I  went to my mother’s church  and the Pastor asked an interesting question. He asked me if I was scared while I was other there. I said ” of course! “. Who wouldn’t be scared of driving into a foreign country who has a reputation for using chemical weapons? Did I let the fear paralyze me? No! I used it. Thats what kept me alert and ready, helping others who needed the help.

Leaders transform fear into something useful then lead.

Leaders transform fear into something useful then lead.

That is how we use fear, not as a barrier but fuel to keep alert and safe. Not paranoid or nervous but cognizant and aware. Its okay to be afraid thats how we see the challenge and choose whether or not to accept it.

Mastering your fears will liberate you.

Mastering your fears will liberate you.

Until next time.

Keeping My Skills Sharp!

Since then I have been doing the school and work thing which is cool that I am learning something but time consuming at the same time. It’s still good and great to be learning a new skill. These skills will add and be what I need to secure the future I want.

Aside

Greetings!

Hello everyone! My name is Dean Joseph and I personally welcome you to MY side of the World Wide Web. Before we get started let me tell you a little bit about myself that way you can get an idea about what this is all about.

I was born from in London, England from a Jamaican mother and an Antiguan father. Yes! That’s quite a mix! But I get my sense of determination and practicality from my mothers side. My fathers side gave me my ambition and independence.

At a young age of eight I moved to New York along with my aunts and their children. We came to live with my Grandmother (RIP). My first memories NY are the lines and strips of fast food places as we drove home. I was your average precocious kid in elementary school. My mom always had her hands full(especially as a single parent).

I went to Mount Vernon High School, never really liked high school I had friends but most of the time I would cut school and hang around the Bronx at other High Schools. Also I think smoking weed kind of ruined a lot of things during that time also.

Eventually I straightened up and went to College. It was a place in upstate NY called SUNY Canton. I learned how to be an electrician and other applied sciences skills. The most valuable thing I learned from that experience was how to live away from home.

I graduated and came back to Mount Vernon where I worked for a Temp Agency. No one never told me that I would have to pay back the student loans I took out. My friend coerced me to join the Army with him. Thankfully my college background helped me secure a job fixing generators instead of a frontline infantry job.

The Army gave me something that I never had, a father figure. Also it REALLY showed me home to live away from home. The first place I went to was Ft. Drum, NY.

Fort Drum was interesting I made some new friends and unlocked my focus and potential. Then it was off to Germany there I REALLY discovered how to be away from home. In 2003 I went to Iraq that was an unique experience. What I go from that was when America goes to war they will stop at nothing to destroy the enemy. I stayed out there for about 4 months.

I went back to Fort Drum in October of 2003. By this time I was a Sergeant and a leader of soldiers. Imagine having 10 children all with different issues such as a pregnant teenage wife and a thief. The one of the things that the Army showed we may be all different races but we all still human with all the same needs and desires about life. I decided after this stint in the Army I would not re-enlist again. I was transferred to another unit and did a office job for a while. This was good as it made me see how a business is run from the inside. I took a lot of good information from that job which I still use to this day.

I got stop lossed which means the Army extended me without my choice to go back to Iraq. This time the base I stayed on was built up and was like a summer camp compared to how I lived the last time. Showers, Internet Burger King what more could you ask for? I stayed out there for a year. It was good because it gave me time to really think about what I wanted to do when I got out of the Army.

Currently I work for NYC Transit fixing a Subway trains and working on my Masters in Web Design. Its been a long road, but I can say that I have learned and I am STILL learningSo stay tuned as my journey continues!
